Where it came from
Verazol, the Split Current was released in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising. Designed as a legendary creature for the Commander format, the card focuses on the kicker mechanic, a hallmark of the Zendikar plane that allows players to pay additional costs for enhanced effects. The card represents a mythic-rare elemental entity, reflecting the untamed, volatile nature of the plane's landscape and the recurring theme of powerful mana-infused beings inhabiting its shifting terrain.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed character work and ethereal lighting. Villeneuve sought to visualize Verazol as a fluid, elemental force of nature, emphasizing its watery form and spectral presence. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players seeking a synergistic leader for blue-green decks, particularly those built around maximizing the efficiency of kicked spells.
