Where it came from
Verazol, the Split Current was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising. Designed as a legendary creature to anchor Simic-colored kicker strategies, the card reflects the set's return to the adventure-themed plane of Zendikar, emphasizing exploration and the mechanical revival of the kicker keyword. Its design focuses on flexibility and mana scaling, allowing players to create increasingly powerful board states as the game progresses.
The artwork was created by illustrator Grzegorz Rutkowski, who leaned into the surreal, aquatic aesthetic of the Merfolk inhabitants of Zendikar. His depiction of Verazol highlights the character's fluid, ethereal nature and its ability to manipulate water currents, fitting the card's multi-kicker ability which allows it to enter the battlefield with various power-boosting counters. Upon release, it was well-received by players looking for a commander capable of leveraging high-mana synergies in a casual play environment.
