What it does
(tap: Add black mana or green mana.)
This land enters tapped unless you control two or more basic lands.
Shadowmoor contains many such places: not evil, not malevolent, but pulsing with something bitter and eldritch.

Where it came from
Vernal Fen was released as part of the Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander expansion, a set designed to revisit the aesthetics and mechanics of the 2007 Lorwyn block. The card reflects the quintessential 'shadowmoor' transition, blending the vibrant, storybook imagery of the original plane with the darker, more unsettling tone introduced in the subsequent expansion. It functions as a land card, intended to provide mana utility while reinforcing the tribal and environmental themes that define this specific corner of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.
The visual design of this card leans into the lush, overgrown motifs common to the plane, focusing on natural, swampy textures that signify life and decay existing in tandem. Illustrators tasked with the Lorwyn aesthetic were generally encouraged to lean into high-fantasy pastoralism, and this card maintains that standard by emphasizing the shifting landscape. It was received by the player community as a flavorful staple for deck-building, valued primarily for its thematic coherence within the set rather than competitive dominance.
