Wickerbough Elder

Wickerbough Elder was introduced as part of the Lorwyn block in 2007, a set celebrated for its focus on tribal synergy and the whimsical, autumnal aesthetic of the plane of Lorwyn. Designed to mechanically support the treefolk and elemental tribes, the card utilizes the +1/+1 counter mechanic to provide flexible utility, allowing players to destroy artifacts or enchantments at the cost of its own growth. It reflects the set's broader design goal of encouraging interactive gameplay through creature-based effects.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Ron Spears, who captured the character as a stoic, moss-covered sentinel deeply connected to the forest. The design successfully merges the creature's functional role as a versatile utility piece with the visual identity of the Lorwyn treefolk, characterized by their gnarled, organic appearances. Upon its release, it became a staple in green-based decks, particularly within the Commander format, where its repeatable ability to neutralize threats remains highly valued by players for its efficiency and thematic cohesion.
