Where it came from
Very Cryptic Command was released in 2017 as part of the Un-set expansion Unstable, a series designed specifically for casual, unconventional play. The card is a satirical take on the powerful Cryptic Command from the Lorwyn set, utilizing the same frame and mechanics but featuring varying, humorous effects that intentionally blur the lines of standard Magic: The Gathering rules.
The card’s design, featuring the illustration by Zack Stella, leans into the chaotic and whimsical aesthetic of the Un-set environment. It was intended to challenge players to interact with the game in absurd ways, such as requiring players to physically move components or perform arbitrary actions, which earned it a place among collectors who appreciate the humor and experimental design philosophy of Wizards of the Coast's silver-bordered sets.
