Where it came from
Very Cryptic Command was released in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Unstable' set. This set was the third in a series of silver-bordered 'un-sets,' which are designed specifically for casual play and humor rather than sanctioned competitive tournaments. The card was created to serve as a parody of the iconic and powerful 'Cryptic Command' from the Lorwyn set, utilizing the set's signature mechanics of randomness, internal references, and playful rule-breaking.
The card features an illustration by Dan Dos Santos, who captured the chaotic and whimsical aesthetic required for the Unstable line. The design focuses on providing the player with a modular array of effects that are intentionally difficult to interpret, mirroring the 'cryptic' nature of its inspiration while adding a layer of meta-humor. It was well-received by the community for its successful blending of high-utility card design with the lighthearted, experimental spirit that defines the Unstable collection.
