Lore

Why it matters

This uncommon card holds a unique place in a deck by rewarding the player for its departure from the battlefield with a shared resource boost. Because it grants a land to every player simultaneously, it serves as a subtle tool for negotiating table dynamics and accelerating the game pace for everyone involved.

Provenance

Where it came from

Veteran Explorer was originally released in the Weatherlight expansion in 1997, designed to fit the set's graveyard-centric mechanics and tribal synergies. The card was created by Wizards of the Coast to provide a unique catch-up mechanic for green decks in multiplayer formats, forcing all players to search their libraries for basic lands when the creature dies. This design choice solidified its reputation as a quintessential 'group hug' card that encourages ramp across the table.

The Double Masters printing, released in 2020, serves as a high-end reprint of this classic staple. Featuring new, updated artwork by artist Johannes Voss, the version focuses on a more modern, polished aesthetic while retaining the iconic gameplay identity that has made the card a consistent favorite for Commander players for over two decades. The release was well-received by collectors who sought to upgrade their decks with a premium aesthetic version of a functional utility piece.
