Where it came from
Veteran Explorer was originally released in the 1997 expansion Weatherlight. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team during a period of experimentation with mechanics that encouraged symmetrical resource acceleration, the card was intended to create interesting political dynamics in multiplayer games by providing both the player and their opponents with lands.
The version appearing in Mystery Booster 2, numbered 76, utilizes the card's classic original art by Brian Snoddy. Known for his distinct, gritty fantasy aesthetic that defined much of the game’s early visual identity, Snoddy’s illustration highlights the rugged, survivalist nature of the character, a design that has remained a staple in niche archetypes like 'Birthing Pod' decks for over two decades.
