Where it came from
Victory's Herald was released in 2015 as part of the Commander 2015 set, a supplemental product line for Magic: The Gathering specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format. The card belongs to the Call the Spirits deck, which centered on a graveyard-recursion theme involving spirits and enchantment creatures. It was created to provide a repeatable source of life gain and creature power for players utilizing the graveyard as a secondary resource.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Voss sought to capture the ethereal and benevolent aesthetic of a spirit herald, utilizing a luminous color palette that distinguishes it from the gloomier, more traditional undead themes found elsewhere in the deck. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a solid, utility-focused card that incentivized aggressive board states in casual group games.
