Provenance

Where it came from

Vigean Graftmage first appeared in the Dissension expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in 2006 as the final set of the Ravnica block. It was designed to showcase the graft mechanic, a keyword ability central to the Simic Combine guild that allows creatures to enter the battlefield with +1/+1 counters and distribute them to others. The card reflects the guild's biological focus, blending green and blue mana to represent the fusion of nature and scientific experimentation.

The art, illustrated by Jeremy Jarvis, depicts a Simic researcher working within the guild's laboratories. Jarvis, who later became a prominent art director for the game, leaned into the aesthetic of bio-manipulation and experimentation that defined the Simic identity during the Ravnica era. The card was included in The List—a rotating selection of reprints curated by Wizards of the Coast for Set Boosters—under the collector number MM2-68, bringing the vintage design to modern players.
