Where it came from
Virtus the Veiled was released in 2018 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Battlebond. This set was unique within the game’s history as it was designed specifically for the Two-Headed Giant format, emphasizing cooperative gameplay and partnership mechanics. Virtus was created as a mythic rare legendary creature, intended to serve as a commander for decks focused on player-to-player attrition and political manipulation, representing the mysterious and shadowy nature of the set's arena-based lore.
The character was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a moody, ethereal aesthetic to capture the essence of the Veil. The design focuses on the duality between Virtus and his partner, Gorm the Great, with the artwork emphasizing the character's elusiveness and lethal touch. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community, particularly among players who enjoyed strategic, resource-draining gameplay styles that deviate from typical combat-focused strategies.
