Where it came from
Visage of Dread // Dread Osseosaur is a double-faced rare card released in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The set returned players to the plane of Ixalan, focusing on themes of subterranean exploration and primeval mystery. This card design utilizes the set's unique transform mechanic, representing the transformation of a ritualistic visage into a reanimated skeletal dinosaur as the game state progresses.
The card features illustration by artist Wisnu Tan, who captured the distinct aesthetic transition between the set's Mesoamerican-inspired architecture and the terrifying undead creatures dwelling within the caverns. The design serves to emphasize the set's focus on graveyard recursion and creature-based combat, and it was received by players as a flavorful utility tool for black-green archetypes that rely on sacrificing permanents to generate board presence.
