Visara the Dreadful was originally released as a rare card in the 2002 Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a powerful black legendary creature with the ability to destroy other creatures, the card became a cornerstone of control strategies in the tournament scene. The World Championship Decks 2003 release, which includes this specific version, was designed to provide players with replicas of the exact sixty-card decks used by top competitors during the 2003 World Championship, serving both as a commemorative set and a resource for players to study professional deck-building.

The card's striking illustration was created by Kev Walker, a prolific fantasy artist known for his dark and visceral aesthetic.
