Where it came from
Vivien, Champion of the Wilds was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. This set represented a pivotal moment in the game's narrative, bringing together dozens of Planeswalker characters to defend the plane of Ravnica from the schemes of the dragon Nicol Bolas. The card depicts Vivien Reid, an archer and planeswalker who champions the natural world and preserves the memory of her lost home plane of Skalla through her spirit-manifesting bow.
The card was illustrated by Chris Rallis, a frequent contributor to the franchise known for his dynamic character portraits and detailed armor textures. The design utilizes a 'static ability' mechanic unique to the War of the Spark set, allowing the player to cast creature spells as though they had flash. Upon release, the card was widely received by players as a flexible utility tool in green-based decks, appreciated for both its tactical combat application and its role in the expanded lore of the multi-planar conflict.
