Where it came from
Vivien, Monsters' Advocate was released as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set in 2020. This card introduced a powerful planeswalker character centered on a theme of creature-based synergy and deck manipulation, reflecting the set's focus on monstrous entities and the bond between humanity and beasts. It was designed to provide players with a versatile tool for both finding specific creatures and protecting the board, fitting squarely into the strategic landscape of the Ikoria expansion.
The illustrative design for this version of the card was created by artist Magali Villeneuve, who is well-regarded in the Magic: The Gathering community for her expressive character work. The art captures Vivien Reid in a dynamic, defiant pose that emphasizes her role as a protector of nature. Upon its release, the card was widely discussed for its high power level in multiple formats, becoming a recognizable staple that blended functional utility with the narrative aesthetic of the Ikoria plane.
