Where it came from
Vivisection was originally illustrated by Aleksi Briclot for the Scars of Mirrodin expansion in 2010. The card serves as a thematic representation of Phyrexian experimentation, a core visual element of the set's narrative as the biomechanical forces of New Phyrexia began to overtake the plane. The card was selected for the 2022 release of Innistrad: Double Feature to provide a stylistic departure from the primary set's focus.
Innistrad: Double Feature was designed as a curated set celebrating the gothic horror themes of the Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow expansions. The cards were printed in a distinctive monochrome 'silver screen' treatment, intended to evoke the aesthetic of classic 1930s horror films. While Vivisection is not native to the gothic horror world of Innistrad, its inclusion in the Double Feature set highlights the project's unconventional approach to merging diverse card art styles into a uniform, high-contrast visual identity.
