Vodalian Merchant

The Vodalian Merchant card from the 2001 World Championship Decks was released by Wizards of the Coast as part of a commemorative set designed to showcase the strategies used by the top players at that year's Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These decks were exact, non-randomized replicas of the lists piloted by finalists, including professional players like Tom van de Logt. They served as a bridge between the high-level competitive scene and the general public, allowing players to experience professional deck configurations firsthand.

The card itself features the original illustration by Dan Frazier, which first appeared in the Invasion expansion. Frazier, a prolific artist in the early days of Magic, utilized a distinct, classic aesthetic that captured the aquatic, tribal nature of the Merfolk. While the card is a standard utility creature, its inclusion in the 2001 World Championship product is notable for its silver-bordered back and gold-stamped signature, markings that distinguish these tournament replicas from standard game cards and have since made them a specialized niche for collectors interested in the history of professional play.
