Provenance

Where it came from

The Lord of Atlantis card featured in the 2001 World Championship Decks was a reprint of a classic Magic: The Gathering creature, originally debuted in the game's 1993 Alpha set. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast to replicate the exact card lists used by the top eight finalists at the 2001 World Championship. By including these cards in a boxed set, the company allowed players to experience and study the tournament-winning strategies employed by professional players of that era.

The design of the Lord of Atlantis retains the original aesthetic established by artist Melissa Benson, whose illustrations were instrumental in defining the visual identity of early Magic sets. The 2001 championship versions are distinguished by a gold-bordered back and the player's signature printed on the card face, marking them as commemorative artifacts rather than standard tournament-legal cards. They remain highly regarded by collectors for their historical connection to the competitive meta-game at the turn of the millennium.
