Provenance

Where it came from

Void was released in 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the Invasion set marked a significant narrative turning point for the game, depicting a multiversal war against the Phyrexians. As a rare sorcery, Void was designed to reflect the destructive, board-clearing nature of the conflict, forcing players to choose a number and eliminate key threats from the battlefield and the opponent's hand.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Arnie Swekel, who contributed numerous designs to the set. Swekel's approach for the Invasion cycle often leaned into the dark, mechanical, and ethereal aesthetic of the Phyrexians. Upon its release, the card was received as a high-utility control tool, noted for its ability to bypass traditional protection effects by targeting specific mana costs, cementing its place in the history of competitive play.
