Provenance

Where it came from

Urza's Filter was released in 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the storyline of the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria, the card represents the advanced artifice of the legendary Planeswalker Urza. The mechanics of the card reflect his role as an architect of defense, designed to simplify the complex mana requirements of multicolored spells which were the thematic focus of the Invasion set.

The artwork was illustrated by Rebecca Guay, a prolific artist known for her distinct, ethereal watercolor style that contrasted with the grittier aesthetic prevalent in other parts of the set. Guay's depiction of the relic captures a sense of arcane mechanical precision. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, valued by players for its ability to smooth out mana bases in limited and casual formats, securing its place as a functional piece of late-90s and early-2000s card design.
