Volcanic Eruption

Volcanic Eruption was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to provide a portable, strategic experience for convention attendees. This card served as a high-cost rare designed to punish players utilizing blue mana sources, reflecting the early design philosophy of color-specific hate cards.

The artwork was commissioned from Douglas Shuler, one of the original illustrators whose work helped define the game's distinctive fantasy aesthetic. Shuler opted for a visceral depiction of a caldera unleashing elemental destruction, aligning with the card's mechanical intent to destroy land cards. While early cards like this were initially experimental in balance, the artwork is frequently noted by collectors for capturing the raw, unpredictable nature of the game's early art direction.
