Volcanic Eruption was originally released as a rare sorcery in the 1994 Summer Magic expansion, often referred to as Edgar. This set was intended to be a corrected reprint of the earlier Revised Edition, featuring updated card art and fixes for notorious errors like the blue Hurricane. However, due to a printing error that resulted in a limited release, it became one of the most elusive sets in the history of Magic: The Gathering, transforming these cards into significant rarities for high-end collectors.

The artwork for this specific iteration was provided by Douglas Shuler, a prominent illustrator during the game's early years. Shuler’s aesthetic for the piece captures the elemental, destructive nature of the card's effect, fitting the gritty, foundational art style that defined the game's initial design philosophy.
