Volcanic Spray

Volcanic Spray was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to emphasize the graveyard as a secondary resource, shifting gameplay away from the slower control-heavy environments of the previous block. This card, a common red sorcery, reflects that set's focus on low-cost, tactical spells that could be bolstered by the flashback mechanic, allowing players to cast it from their graveyard for additional utility.

The illustration was created by artist David Martin, who contributed numerous pieces to the game during the early 2000s. Martin's visual approach for this card captures the chaotic, elemental nature of an eruption, utilizing vibrant, warm tones that align with the color identity of red cards in the game. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, mid-tier utility piece for limited formats, serving as a reliable tool for dealing small amounts of damage to multiple targets.
