Where it came from
Volcanic Salvo was released in 2021 as part of the Commander set associated with Strixhaven: School of Mages, a magic-themed expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to reflect the scholarly, collegiate atmosphere of Strixhaven University, featuring a top-down design process where mechanics were built to represent the diverse magical disciplines taught within the five colleges of the institution.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-term contributor to the game whose style often features ethereal lighting and highly expressive, painterly compositions. As a high-cost sorcery, Volcanic Salvo was crafted to reward players who have already committed resources to the battlefield, fitting into the 'red' color philosophy of impulsive, high-impact elemental magic. It was received by players as a flexible removal tool, particularly effective in commander formats where larger creature counts are common.
