Where it came from
Volo, Guide to Monsters was released in July 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. This set marked the first time the collectible card game integrated the Dungeons & Dragons lore and characters directly into its mechanics. The card depicts Volothamp Geddarm, the famous wizard and chronicler from the Dungeons & Dragons universe, known for his eccentric travelogues and questionable observational skills.
The card was designed to reflect Volo’s role as an observer and documentarian, featuring a mechanic that allows players to copy creature spells as they are cast. The artwork, illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, portrays Volo in his traditional travel attire, captured in a moment of scholarly inquiry. Upon its release, the card was well-received by fans for successfully translating the character's narrative personality into the tactical framework of the game.
