Where it came from
Volo, Guide to Monsters was released as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set for Magic: The Gathering in 2021. This set marked a significant crossover event, integrating the lore and iconic characters of Dungeons Dragons directly into the card game mechanics. The card itself draws inspiration from the legendary in-universe author Volothamp Geddarm, a classic figure in D&D literature known for his travelogues across the Realms.
The card features an alternate 'showcase' frame designed to evoke the aesthetic of classic D&D monster manuals and field guides. This specific design choice was intended to resonate with long-time tabletop players by utilizing the parchment-style textures and marginalia found in traditional campaign sourcebooks. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by both Magic players for its unique creature-copying ability and by D&D fans for its faithful tribute to the franchise's rich publishing history.
