Volrath

Volrath, the Evincar of Rath, debuted as part of the Magic: The Gathering Vanguard series in 1997. The set was created to introduce a new gameplay variant where players used oversized cards to represent powerful characters from the lore, effectively altering their starting life totals and hand sizes before the game began. The design was intended to provide a narrative-driven experience that brought the primary antagonists and protagonists of the Weatherlight Saga directly onto the tabletop.

The character illustration was handled by artist Mark Zug, who sought to capture the intimidating, metamorphic nature of Volrath as he appeared in the storyline. As one of the most prominent villains in the early Magic multiverse, the card was received as a centerpiece of the collection, offering players a unique mechanical advantage that reflected the character’s dominance in the Rath block. The set remains a notable artifact of the late 1990s experimental design phase, marking a shift toward more personalized commander-style gameplay.
