Where it came from
The Serra Vanguard card was released in 1997 as part of a promotional set designed to accompany the Magic: The Gathering Vanguard expansion. These oversized cards were intended to introduce a new gameplay mechanic where players would begin the game with unique static abilities and modified life totals or hand sizes, effectively allowing them to embody legendary characters from the game's lore.
The card features artwork by Greg Staples, who captured the angelic, ethereal aesthetic central to Serra’s identity within the game's mythology. While the Vanguard format did not achieve long-term competitive dominance, the cards remain significant as early examples of specialized card types that paved the way for subsequent variants like Commanders and Planeswalkers.
