Where it came from
The Voltaic Key was first introduced in the 1998 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Mark Rosewater as an artifact capable of untapping other artifacts for a minimal mana investment. This specific printing originated in the 2000 World Championship Decks, a product line featuring gold-bordered, non-tournament-legal reproductions of the decks used by the top players at the 2000 World Championship. These decks were produced to allow casual players to experience the high-level competitive strategies of the era, such as the aggressive artifact-based combo decks that defined the competitive meta.
The 2000 World Championship edition of the Voltaic Key retains the original technical illustration by Mark Zug, which depicts a mechanical device glowing with latent energy. This version is distinguished by its unique gold-bordered frame and the printed signature of the professional player who utilized it in their deck list during the event. While the card is functionally identical to the standard release, it is prized by collectors as a historical document of the 'Combo Winter' era of Magic, representing a pivotal moment where artifact synergies became a dominant force in professional play.
