Voracious Vampire

Voracious Vampire was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the conclusion to the Ixalan block, which centered on a Mesoamerican-inspired plane where four factions—the Vampire Conquistadors of the Legion of Dusk, the Sun Empire humans, the Merfolk of the River Heralds, and the Brazen Coalition pirates—competed for control of a golden city. The design of the creature reflects the Legion of Dusk's aesthetic, which blends gothic vampire tropes with the armor and religious zealotry of 16th-century Spanish explorers.

The card illustration was commissioned from artist Kieran Yanner, a long-time contributor to the game known for his dynamic character work and ability to capture high-fantasy action. Yanner was tasked with depicting the vampire’s predatory nature, focusing on the aggressive posture and the infusion of black mana that powers the Legion of Dusk's mechanics. As a common rarity card, it was designed primarily to reinforce the tribal synergy of the vampire faction in limited gameplay formats, where its ability to gain power and toughness upon entering the battlefield served as a reliable tool for players building black-red deck archetypes.
