Where it came from
Journey to Eternity // Atzal, Cave of Eternity was introduced in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering expansion Rivals of Ixalan. Designed as a double-faced enchantment that transforms into a legendary land, it was part of a cycle of cards exploring the dual nature of the plane of Ixalan, where exploration and transformation are central thematic pillars. It was conceptualized to represent the cycle of life and death within the jungle setting, mechanically rewarding players for sacrificing their creatures to fuel a powerful land.
The card was illustrated by Daarken, a frequent contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and moody fantasy art. The design team focused on the interaction between the green-black color identity and the graveyard, aiming to create a card that felt both ominous and rewarding for players committed to a sacrifice-themed strategy. Upon release, it was well-received by players in the Commander format for its unique utility, though it saw more niche application in competitive Standard formats.
