Where it came from
Vraska, Swarm's Eminence was released as a promotional card in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set, War of the Spark. The set served as a climactic narrative milestone for the game, featuring a massive gathering of planeswalker characters converging on the plane of Ravnica to battle the antagonist Nicol Bolas. This specific iteration of Vraska was designed as a Buy-a-Box promotional card, intended to incentivize players to purchase full display boxes of the set upon its release.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the fantasy gaming space known for her evocative character portraiture. Her design for this version of Vraska emphasizes the character's role as a Gorgon assassin, utilizing a deep color palette and sharp, atmospheric lighting to reflect her intimidating presence. As a functional card, it received attention for its synergy with the proliferate mechanic, which defined much of the strategic landscape during the War of the Spark meta-game.
