Where it came from
Wail of War is a card from the Tarkir: Dragonstorm set, an expansion that revisits the time-twisting narrative of the Tarkir plane. Released to build upon the lore of the dragon-dominated alternate timeline, the set focuses on the volatile magical clashes between the remaining clans and the dragons they worship or oppose. The design language reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic of the block, prioritizing dynamic action and the visceral, destructive nature of draconic power.
The illustration was crafted to evoke the chaotic atmosphere of a battlefield transformed by sudden, overwhelming aerial assault. Wizards of the Coast art directors sought to maintain consistency with the existing visual identity of Tarkir, using bold color palettes and aggressive linework to convey the weight and speed of the card's effect. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set’s mechanics, appreciated by players for its thematic integration into aggressive deck strategies.
