Where it came from
Wake the Past was released in 2021 as part of the Commander expansion set titled Edge of Eternities. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering multiplayer format, the card reflects the game's ongoing exploration of graveyard recursion mechanics, specifically focusing on the Orzhov syndicate's thematic blend of life, death, and debt. It was developed to provide players with a high-impact utility spell capable of bringing multiple artifact or creature cards back from the graveyard to the battlefield simultaneously.
The card's artwork, credited to artist Johannes Voss, captures a somber and ethereal aesthetic consistent with the high-fantasy visual language of the game. Voss utilized a muted, melancholic color palette to emphasize the theme of resurrecting history, aligning with the card's function of retrieving past assets. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its strategic flexibility, particularly within decks centered around artifact synergies or sacrifice-heavy playstyles.
