Where it came from
Wake the Past was released in 2021 as part of the Silverquill Statement Commander deck, a thematic entry within the Commander 2021 set tied to the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's focus on the Silverquill College, which emphasizes political maneuverability and group-oriented gameplay mechanics, allowing players to return artifacts and creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield in a mass-resurrection effect.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's academic aesthetic to create a visual representation of memory and historical revival. Voss, known for his ethereal and detailed style in the game, aimed to convey a sense of gravitas and restoration that aligns with the card's function of bringing back past assets, and it was generally well-received by the Commander community for its strategic utility in board-state recovery.
