Where it came from
The 'Wakka, Devoted Guardian' card was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy' Commander decks. Designed to bridge the tactical mechanics of the trading card game with the narrative beats of Final Fantasy X, the card captures Wakka’s role as a protective companion and blitzball enthusiast within the party's journey across Spira.
The card features artwork that emphasizes Wakka’s signature weapon, the blitzball, and his steadfast loyalty to his allies. As part of a highly anticipated crossover, the design team focused on translating his thematic abilities—focused on physical prowess and guardianship—into the game's mechanics, resulting in a card that resonates with both long-time fans of the RPG series and collectors of the Commander format.
