What it does

Defender (This creature can't attack.)

Whenever this creature blocks a creature, if at least one other Wall creature is blocking that creature and no non-Wall creatures are blocking that creature, this creature gains banding until end of turn. (If any creatures with banding you control are blocking a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Wall of Caltrops was released in 1994 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Legends. This set is widely recognized for introducing the concept of legendary creatures and multi-color spells, marking a significant evolution in the game's strategic complexity. The card was designed to function as a defensive utility piece, utilizing the 'wall' creature type to stabilize the board state during the early stages of a game.

The artwork for this card was provided by Melissa A. Benson, a prominent illustrator during the early years of the game. Her work on Wall of Caltrops captures a stark, utilitarian aesthetic, focusing on the spiked defensive implements characteristic of the card's name. Upon its release, the card became a staple for players building defensive or control-oriented decks, appreciated for its low mana cost and its ability to deter ground-based attackers in the slower-paced, experimental meta of the mid-1990s.
