Wall of Frost

Wall of Frost was introduced in the Magic 2010 core set, released in July 2009. This set marked a significant shift in Magic: The Gathering history as the first core set to include new card designs rather than relying solely on reprints, aimed at refreshing the game's identity and mechanics for both new and returning players. The card was designed as a defensive staple, featuring an ability that tapped the creature it blocked, thereby preventing it from untapping during its controller's next untap step, which solidified its role as a powerful stall tactic in limited and casual formats.

The atmospheric illustration for the card was created by artist Howard Lyon. Lyon focused on capturing the chilling, static nature of the elemental creature, utilizing a cool color palette and sharp, crystalline forms to convey the sense of an impassable barrier. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base as an effective, straightforward common that provided blue decks with a reliable defensive presence, a role it would go on to fill in several subsequent core sets due to its functional design.
