Where it came from
Wall of Frost was originally introduced in the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2011. It was designed as an uncommon creature intended to serve as a defensive cornerstone in Blue decks, utilizing a 'defender' mechanic that hampers opposing creatures by tapping them and preventing them from untapping during their controller's next turn. This ability reflects the card's theme of freezing enemies in place, a classic representation of frost-based magic in the game's color identity.
The 2017 Modern Masters printing features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, who replaced the original illustrator, Zoltan Boros. Villeneuve's rendition leans into a more ethereal and cold aesthetic, consistent with the high-fantasy art direction found throughout the Modern Masters series. This set was curated to provide players with access to older, sought-after staples, and Wall of Frost was included to support the draft environment, where its high toughness and stalling capability provide a distinct tactical advantage.
