Where it came from
Wall of Mourning was released as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Commander set in 2021. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format, the card reflects the gothic horror themes synonymous with the Innistrad plane. Its mechanics emphasize the set's graveyard-centric gameplay, intended to provide utility to black-aligned decks that utilize the mechanics of self-milling and resurrection.
The card’s illustration is credited to artist Zezhou Chen, who captures the somber, macabre aesthetic central to the set’s visual identity. By depicting a wall inscribed with the names of the departed, the art reinforces the themes of grief and ritual prevalent in the world of Innistrad. Upon its debut, it was received as a flavorful, functional addition for players seeking specific defensive and card-selection tools in the multiplayer Commander format.
