Where it came from
Wall of Mourning was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Commander set. The card was designed to support the set's graveyard-centric themes, which drew inspiration from the gothic horror tropes synonymous with the Innistrad plane. Its mechanics reflect the theme of eerie preservation, allowing players to manipulate their graveyard to recover resources, consistent with the set's focus on the cyclical nature of life and death.
The card’s illustration was crafted to evoke a sense of somber, atmospheric dread typical of the plane’s aesthetic. In keeping with the set's design philosophy, the art emphasizes the architectural and supernatural integration of the dead into the landscape. Upon its release, it was well-received by players seeking utility for graveyard strategies, proving to be a reliable, thematic inclusion for Commander decks built around resilient, black-aligned mechanics.
