Where it came from
Wall of Resurgence was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the narrative of the Gatewatch—a group of planeswalkers defending the plane of Zendikar against the threat of the Eldrazi. This card fits into the set's mechanical emphasis on land-based synergies and the 'Awaken' keyword, which allows players to turn their lands into creature threats to combat the encroaching corruption.
The artwork was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. Kieryluk designed the piece to depict the land itself rising to form a defensive barricade, visually mirroring the card's function of animating a land into a fortified creature. Upon release, the card was received as a functional tool for limited formats and defensive white-aligned deck strategies, highlighting the set's thematic commitment to the living, reactive nature of the plane of Zendikar.
