Where it came from
War Cadence was originally released in the Commander 2013 set, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to expand the card pool for the popular multiplayer Commander format. The card itself is a reprint of an effect originally debuted in the Mercadian Masques set from 1999, intended to manipulate combat math by forcing opponents to invest mana to block, effectively punishing defensive playstyles in larger games.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Steve Argyle, who utilized a bold, high-contrast style that emphasizes the chaotic movement of battle. His aesthetic choices for this set aimed to capture the intensity of mass combat, a hallmark of the Commander experience, and it was received by the community as a thematic fit for red-aligned decks looking to force action on the board.
