Where it came from
War Cadence was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was inspired by the plane of Mercadia, a mercantilist world defined by goblins, mercenaries, and political intrigue. Mechanically, the card was designed to support aggressive red-aligned strategies by creating a cost-prohibitive environment for opponents attempting to block during combat, reflecting the chaotic and overwhelming nature of a front-line assault.
The card’s visual identity was captured by artist rk post, a prominent illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering community during the late 1990s and early 2000s. His work on this piece emphasizes a kinetic, visceral depiction of conflict, utilizing bold lines and a saturated color palette consistent with the aesthetic shift toward more stylized, high-fantasy illustrations that characterized the block. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its niche utility in deck-building, particularly for strategies that relied on forcing damage through stalled board states.
