Warden of the Chained

Warden of the Chained was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering expansion Theros Beyond Death. The set was designed to return players to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros, focusing on themes of the Underworld and the struggle between gods and mortals. This card specifically embodies the resilience and entrapment central to the plane's lore, serving as a powerful red creature that requires a specific condition—controlling a creature with power four or greater—to attack or block, effectively simulating the struggle of a shackled titan or guardian.

The card’s striking illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who has contributed numerous pieces to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. His design emphasizes the visual language of Theros, utilizing intense lighting and heavy, chains-bound iconography to convey the card's mechanical constraints. Upon release, the card was received as a nuanced inclusion for players focusing on aggressive strategies that utilize high-power creatures, finding a home in various Limited and Standard formats of the time.
