Where it came from
Warden of the First Tree was released in 2015 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Fate Reforged. The set was designed to explore the history of the plane of Tarkir, focusing on the origins of the dragon-worshipping clans that defined the plane's lore. The card reflects this thematic weight, depicting a member of the Abzan Houses, a faction characterized by their reverence for ancestral spirits and their cultivation of the Great Trees.
The artwork was illustrated by Ryan Yee, who aimed to capture the card's mechanical progression—its ability to grow in power and utility as mana is invested into it. By depicting the Warden in a meditative, grounded stance within the Abzan landscape, Yee emphasized the card's role as a scalable threat. Upon release, it was recognized by players for its versatility as a flexible, repeatable mana sink, making it a recurring presence in competitive Abzan-aligned decks during the Khans of Tarkir era.
