Where it came from
The Wasteland art card from the Zendikar Rising Art Series was released in 2020 as part of a specialized subset of collectible cards designed to showcase the expanded illustrative work featured in the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were produced as high-quality, frame-less reproductions of the digital paintings used for the set's gameplay cards, serving as a distinct aesthetic component for collectors rather than functional game pieces.
The illustration was created by artist Alayna Danner, who has been a prominent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering art team. In this series, Danner was tasked with capturing the desolate and haunting atmosphere of a ruined landscape, utilizing a palette that emphasizes the bleakness associated with the Wasteland card's legacy in game mechanics. The series was well-received by fans of the game's evolving visual identity, providing a platform to appreciate the intricate details of the artwork without the overlaid text and frame elements typically found on standard playing cards.
