Where it came from
Waterfall Aerialist was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the prestigious Strixhaven University, the card represents the Prismari college, which emphasizes the intersection of magic and artistic expression. It was designed to highlight the college's focus on spectacle and elemental mastery, utilizing the 'magecraft' mechanic that rewards players for casting instant and sorcery spells.
The artwork was commissioned from artist Justine Mara Andersen, who sought to capture the fluidity and grace of the aerialist as she weaves through a waterfall. The piece utilizes a dynamic color palette to reflect the blue and red mana identity of the Prismari mages. Upon its debut, the card was received as a functional limited-environment tool, valued by players for its ability to provide aerial evasion and board presence within a spell-heavy deck.
