Where it came from
Watermarket was originally released as a card in the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set designed to explore humor and unconventional mechanics within the game's framework. It serves as a parody of traditional land cards, specifically playing on the concept of 'water' as a resource and the aesthetic tropes of high-fantasy cartography. The design team, led by Mark Rosewater, intended the card to fit into the 'space-carnival' theme of the set, utilizing a whimsical art style that contrasts with the more grounded, serious tone of typical Magic sets.
The card was included in 'The List', a curated selection of cards that appear in Set Boosters, specifically receiving a foil treatment for the Unfinity edition. This release was aimed at providing collectors with premium versions of niche cards that lean into the silver-bordered or un-set design philosophy. Upon its arrival, the card was received primarily by fans of the game's lighter side and art collectors who value the vibrant, illustrative approach typical of the Unfinity aesthetic.
