Modular Monstrosity

Modular Monstrosity was originally designed as a centerpiece of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022. As part of the 'Un-' series, which explores experimental, humorous, and meta-textual card mechanics, the card was conceptualized to test the limits of game rules by allowing a creature to swap its abilities with other permanents on the battlefield. The design team sought to create an experience that leaned into the whimsical and chaotic nature of silver-bordered-style gameplay, even while this specific version appeared within the supplemental 'The List' pool.

The card features distinct, inventive artwork by artist Simon Dominic, who leaned into the retro-futuristic, carnival-themed aesthetic that defines the Unfinity set. The visual style aims to capture a sense of cosmic absurdity, aligning with the set's overall science-fiction space carnival narrative. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a curiosity by the competitive community, though it remains a popular choice for Commander players who appreciate the high-variance, interactive puzzle-like gameplay that the card's ability encourages.
